U S Navy Flag heads Oaks Stud roster

The Oaks Stud in Cambridge have announced their service fees for the forthcoming breeding season with the roster to be headed by leading second season sire U S Navy Flag at $15,000 + GST.

The son of War Front was represented by Gr.2 Auckland Guineas (1600m) winner Pendragon, who also finished runner-up in the Karaka Million 3YO Classic (1600m). Other highlight progeny include multiple stakes winner Chantilly Lace, Gr.2 Edward Manifold Stakes runner-up Aprilia and multiple Group One performer To Catch A Thief.

Kheir hoping to come up smelling of Roses

Well-known Australian owner Ozzie Kheir will head into Saturday’s Gr.2 The Roses (2000m) at Doomben with a couple of Kiwi-bred fillies he is hoping can feature in the Gr.1 Queensland Oaks (2200m) next month.

Scarlet Oak was trained in her homeland by Ken and Bev Kelso, for whom she won on debut at Matamata in March. She then transferred to the care of leading Sydney trainer Chris Waller following her sale and she finished runner-up in the Gr.3 James H B Carr Stakes (1400m) in her Australian debut at Randwick before winning her maiden at Newcastle earlier this month.

Kennedy taking on training challenge

Warren Kennedy has made waves in the New Zealand jockey ranks since moving from his native South Africa, and now his wife, Barbara, is hoping to do the same as a trainer.

The 32-year-old horsewoman has spent her life in racing and trained in South Africa for a few seasons before moving to New Zealand with her husband and children a couple of years ago.

The six-year-old made four appearances over jumps last year, with his best result a second-placed effort behind former Gr.3 New Zealand Cup (3200m) winner Mondorani over the steeplechase fences at Rotorua in August.
